Navigating the Hybrid Work Model

Businesses are slowly gaining options to move back to pre-pandemic operation. Various hybrid work models have surfaced and the pandemic has shown that work can be done effectively in a variety of ways. This leaves businesses confronted with combining remote workers and in-person staff after over a year of ‘the new normal’. There is overwhelming support from employees to continue to work remotely and companies can no longer cling to the pre-2020 rationale that business must be done at the office.

The workplace of the future is being re-imagined with many options under consideration by businesses of all sizes.  Let’s examine some of the various options:

Remote – First

In this model organizations will continue to operate fully remote, with a few exceptions. Most will keep the office with space for employees to access, and not all employees will have the same flexibility, ie. some will continue coming to the office if their role requires it.

Some large corporations have announced their commitment to the remote-first approach including Google, Spotify, Dropbox and Ford Motor Company, recognizing the needs of employees has shifted.

Office – Occasional

Companies that are eager to stem the losses from unused office space are moving to the office-occasional model where employees come into the office a few times per week. This approach blends in-person collaboration with solo work so the reliance on a mostly local workforce is key. Experts caution leaders to establish best practices for communication early to ensure effective and productive teams.

Office-first, Remote allowed

This model was common prior to COVID-19 restrictions where a small percentage of the staff was remote, and the majority of employees worked from a central office space. The approach enables teams to form closer relationships as a result of everyday interactions which, while having a clear benefit, it can also leave remove workers ‘out of the loop’, leading to reduced engagement, productivity and retention.

Future Considerations

Which model is right for your business will depend on a number of factors; leadership structure, employee preference, physical distancing and ultimately the culture of the organization. As life and work beings to ‘return to normal’ remember to keep communication flowing both ways and seek opportunities to find solutions for employers and employees.
